The original Handy Stop was founded in 1967 by Gary and Louise Cruice. “Mr. Gary”, as he was affectionately known, was only 35 years old when he opened the store in Mid City New Orleans.
Handy Stop expanded to three stores in different parts of the city serving their neighbors and local dignitaries alike. Gary and Louise had 5 sons who grew up working in the stores well into their college years. It was during these formative years that the boys learned from their parents’ Catholic values and exemplary work ethic. Following the passing of her husband, Ms. Louise continued the family business, eventually closing after 21 years of dedicated service to the neighborhood.
Today, Handy Stop Market & Cafe reignites the family spirit of the original store by providing basic necessities to those who live, work, play, and pray in Downtown Lafayette – providing healthier options with locally sourced items to fulfill our mission of helping you live your fullest every day.
Owner & Operator
Handy Stop is a Downtown Lafayette market and deli that is owned and operated by second-generation grocer, Bradley Cruice.
Growing up, Bradley worked with his brothers in his his parents’ New Orleans based grocery. His parents, Gary and Louise, who owned the original Handy Stop, taught him early on how important it was to be involved in the community. One of the top priorities was ensuring there was access to fresh, healthy foods close to home.
Today, Bradley continues the family legacy with Downtown Lafayette’s first official market and grocery in many years.
